On the 23rd, under summer-like sunshine, the annual Father Sidotti Yakushima Landing Memorial Festival – Toward the Land of the Rising Sun! Sunlit Festival celebrated its 40th anniversary at Yakushima Sidotti Plaza (the construction site of the Memorial Museum).
The program opened with a brass band performance by local elementary school students, followed by a variety of local performances including guitar singing, djembe drumming, and group stretching exercises.
In addition, Yuriko Inoue from Kamakura presented a puppet play titled “Sidotti and Tōbei,” which delighted audiences and added a special touch to the day. Inside the building under construction, local food was served, and tents offering art, clothing, and recycled goods were very popular.
Approximately 150 people attended the event. Although the number of participants was slightly lower than last year due to other events being held in town and nearby communities, a large crowd gathered at 11:00 a.m. for the topping-out ceremony, and the traditional treat-throwing drew cheers from local residents and visitors alike.
