Our Second Talk SessionLocal Food and Our Bodies: A Good Relationship

Our second talk session was held on Saturday, October 3, from 3:00 p.m. in the exhibition gallery. Our guest was Saeko Nakata, a registered dietitian living on Yakushima, and the topic was hechima (luffa), a traditional vegetable of the island. Ms. Nakata spoke from a dietitian's point of view about why it matters to eat what is grown locally. Museum Director Tomoko Furui then shared the trials and tribulations of growing hechima at the museum garden, creating dishes with it for the museum café, and eventually turning it into scrubbing sponges. Some participants had grown hechima themselves for many years, and the conversation went on to cover the "hechima culture divide" that splits the Japanese archipelago into north and south. The hechima talk kept going, with no shortage of things to say.
